Do you get off your arse and stick two fingers up to adversity? Well, you probably would like to think that is what you would do. In reality you would most likely go through a period of depression, self doubt and confusion. Disability and depression can be like a hand in a glove, out of others vision but still there. Pain, doubt in your ability to do the easiest things and the adjustment of your expectations are all hurdles you may face daily, monthly and/or every second of every day.
How do YOU carry on, how do you socialise and prosper? Some will crumble, left with no support, no direction and no future vision. Others will meet their disability square in the face, saying "COME ON" I can handle this, no problem. You might find yourself somewhere in the space between these positions. No one, and I mean NO ONE can tell you how to deal with YOUR future. You will need support, something sorely lacking in society as it is today. You will need friends, family or some other ear to listen to you. You don't want to be judged, you don't want to be told how to be "disabled" yet with a positive outlook you can discover a way forward. Try to stay positive. This is not always going to be easy BUT with patience and a realisation that you can cope, if you give yourself a chance.
Don't give in, talk and listen. Explain how you feel to those close to you, even if it's the dog, fish or your favourite doll. Believe that there are people out there who want to help. You deserve to be helped. We all can't be Paralympic champions but we can achieve happiness and a keen confidence in the future.
Stay brave and stay open to the changes that you are about to face.
Good luck. YOU DESERVE IT.
